Steps to Take When Your Identity Has Been Stolen

  • Check your credit reports
  • Fill out an identity theft complaint with the Federal Trade Commision (FTC)
  • File a report with your local police department
  • Talk to your banks and creditors
  • Ask for a fraud alert
  • Talk to your credit card company
  • Talk to your utility and phone company
  • Check to see if your social security number has been used
  • Write down everything:
    • People you talk to
    • Requests
    • Phone numbers
    • Addresses
    • Copies of any documents filed
